Video File Size Calculator
Estimate video storage from bitrate and duration, or recording time from available capacity.
Plan your recording
GB uses 1,000,000,000 bytes. GiB uses 1,073,741,824 bytes. Variable bitrate and container overhead can change the final file size.

About the Video File Size Calculator
Calculate the storage needed for a recording from its video bitrate, audio bitrate and duration. Reverse the calculation to estimate how long a selected capacity can hold. GB and GiB are separate unit choices, so the displayed capacity can match the units you are using. For example, 8 Mbps video plus 160 kbps audio for one hour contains about 3.672 GB of media data. Actual files can differ because of variable bitrate and container overhead.
Features
- Size from video bitrate, audio and duration
- Recording time from available capacity
- Separate GB and GiB units
- Audio included in the estimate
- Formula-based planning without uploading a video
How to use this tool
The Video File Size Calculator works right in your browser — no signup, no installation. Follow these steps:
- Choose file-size or recording-time mode.
- Enter the video and audio bitrates.
- Enter duration or available capacity, using the correct units.
- Read the estimate and leave room for variation in the actual recording.
Frequently asked questions
Why does resolution alone not determine file size?
The calculation uses data rate and duration. Two recordings at the same resolution can use very different bitrates.
Can I estimate CQP, CRF or variable-bitrate recordings?
Use an observed average bitrate from a representative sample. A quality setting alone does not specify a fixed file size.
What is the difference between GB and GiB?
One GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. One GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Choose the unit used by your capacity reading.
