Tile Calculator
Free tile calculator. Enter room and tile size to get the number of tiles, boxes, grout and thinset you need, with waste allowance and grout gap built in.
About the Tile Calculator
Estimate tiles for a rectangular floor or wall from room size, tile dimensions, grout gap and waste allowance. The tool rounds rows and columns up, adds waste, and calculates boxes when tiles per box is provided. Grout and thinset bag counts use fixed area coverage assumptions. Check actual layout and product coverage before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how many tiles I need?
Divide the room into rows and columns: tiles across = ceiling(room length ÷ (tile width + gap)) and rows = ceiling(room width ÷ (tile length + gap)). Multiply for the total, then add waste. This calculator does the division and rounds up for you.
How much waste should I add for tile?
Plan on 10–15% extra for straight (grid) layouts and 20–25% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, which create more offcuts. The waste slider lets you match your layout.
Should I include the grout gap?
The calculation adds the grout gap to each tile dimension when estimating rows and columns. It is a simplified rectangular grid; verify edge cuts, orientation and your layout before ordering.
How much grout and thinset do I need?
As a rule of thumb, one 25 lb bag of grout covers about 100 sq ft of 12-inch tile with a 1/4 inch gap, and a 50 lb bag of thinset covers about 75 sq ft. The calculator gives these estimates for your area.
Is this tile calculator free?
